UK Government – bespoke special edition poster map and postcards

The UK Government hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London, April 2018. The summit is held every two years with fifty-three Commonwealth leaders coming together to share global challenges and agree actions to make a better future. The UK Government team behind the organisation of the event were looking to provide a special gift to the prestigious visitors, as a memento of their visit to London.

Clear Mapping Co were delighted to be approached to create a poster map showcasing London and the iconic venues the Heads of Government would be visiting. The map was created in QGIS using Ordnance Survey Open Data to begin with. Then the landscape was distorted to fit Windsor Castle and central London in to the artwork, and the winding River Thames was condensed.

The map depicts the landmarks and beautiful illustrated details like the Hackney black cabs, old fashioned telephone boxes and the Queen’s guard. The beautiful bespoke illustrated poster maps were presented to the Heads of State, as a keepsake of the event.

Alongside the poster map we created postcards showing the City of London. These were given to more than 2000 delegates in sustainable gift bags during the event. The Royal Mail kindly provided a unique franking stamp for the occasion, so delegates could send their postcards around the world for free. These have already reached far away destinations such as Cyprus, Jamaica and New Zealand!

The organisers of the event could not have been more thrilled with the maps, the feedback has been wonderful. The response from No10’s press office was that they were delighted by the thoughtful and creative gift. We’re told that the Prime Minister, Theresa May loved it too!

At the final ceremony at Windsor Castle, a surprise announcement was made that Rwanda will be hosting the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2020. Clear Mapping Co has just completed a tourism map of Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city, in anticipation of such a momentous event.
