St Marys Bourne History Group – Historical Map Project

Historical Mapping Project

Create an set of beautiful maps to show the history of the village, on acetate layers and stored in a art porfolio case

Compliation of all seven maps

The ancient settlement of St Mary Bourne has an interwoven history with it’s neighbouring parishes such as Hurstbourne Priors and links to the Early Kings and the Church. Due to the complex story of the village of St Mary Bourne, the local history group wanted support in untangling the reference material by converting them into maps.

Clear Mapping Company was asked to create a set of maps which could be left for future historians in a permanent fixed state for future research. We collated datasets from books, partial maps, online resources, spreadsheets and even hand-written tabular datasets cross-referenced this with open data from Ordnance Survey and started to piece together the history of this place.

We decided to organise the maps by date from pre-1200 to present day on acetate sheets which then could be overlaid, especially useful for finding the relationship between ancestors and for genealogy research. Family names seem to crop-up frequently through out the ages as people only left due to disease, war or famine.

The historians are excited to continue their work revealing insights into the family tree of peoples ingrained in the fabric of the village of St Mary Bourne and being able to pass on the maps to future historians via Winchester Cathedral who will maintain them for posterity.

We were looking for a large map to be the feature of our new office on the north Norfolk coast. We met Caroline on site when the building was still under renovation and she very quickly understood what we were looking for. She worked to a tight schedule and helped us to create a map that really embraces our brand guidelines and has the WOW factor that we were hoping for. Caroline and her team were very easy to work with and we are delighted with the end result.
